Desktop Computers and Exterior Dust Removal

by MikeM on August 17, 2008

Question:  My house is dusty and I have three pets. Do I ever need to clean off my desktop computer that sits on the floor?

Answer: Cleaning dust from ventilation openings on desktop systems can help keep the system running cool and prevent damage to the system and the internal components from heat. We have seen systems have significant problems from excess heat buildup due to lack of proper ventilation. Warm summertime weather can make this problem more pronounced.

Cleaning Computer Vents

Removing ventilation clogging dust and pet hair can be done with one of the attachments on a standard vacuum cleaner. However, before the cleaning process you should make certain your computer is fully powered off. You can even unplug the power cord from the computer. With the computer off, pass the vacuum slowly over the various External vents and openings. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, this cleaning is also something Home Technology Solutions of Marin (web site here) can do for you as part of our tune up process.
